Connecting Ezekiel to the Big Picture of the Bible

To understand the book of Ezekiel in two minutes, let’s place it within the big picture of the Bible.

The Bible reveals God's plan to rescue humanity through Jesus Christ.

In the Old Testament, we can see why this rescue is necessary, because that’s where the problem arises when man rebels against God.

And the prophetic books warn of the consequences of rebellion, but also announce the solution to the problem.

The Book of Ezekiel takes place after the Law was given, but before the cross.

The Key Ideas of Ezekiel

Ezekiel shows that God turns away from evil but still makes restoration possible.

So with that… let’s dive in:

The book begins with the priest Ezekiel, who lives in Babylonian captivity—far away from his homeland of Israel. And it’s here that he has a vision.

This vision highlights the central problem: Israel had rebelled against God, broken His law, and followed after other gods…

And in doing so, they destroyed their relationship with Him. God turned away from evil and withdrew from His people. And so…they lost the one thing they needed most: closeness to God.

Israel was conquered and taken captive…and God… did not intervene.

But the book of Ezekiel, isn’t just directed to Israel alone, but also the surrounding nations who had mocked Israel's downfall, and behaved no better themselves. Because of this, God condemns them, and announces judgment upon them as well.

But after all these judgments, the perspective at the end of the Book of Ezekiel changes.

God promises restoration to His people Israel—not because they’ve done anything, but because God Himself chooses to act on their behalf.

He promises to give them a new heart and a new spirit, which will finally enable them to keep His commandments and live in relationship with Him.

When they lie there like dry bones, He will bring them back to life.

And He will give them back what they so desperately needed: closeness to God.
