Isaiah lives at a time when the people of Israel are rebelling against God. In an overwhelming encounter with God, Isaiah recognizes God's absolute holiness and his own sin. But God forgives Isaiah and makes him his prophet, his messenger. With the message of this encounter, Isaiah comes before the people.

God is both holy and gracious and offers forgiveness to anyone who sincerely repents. Isaiah condemns their rebellion against God and calls them to repentance. But his message is largely rejected and many continue in their rebellion. As a result, Isaiah announces judgment on Israel and on the surrounding nations who are also guilty for despising God and oppressing others. Yet, even in the face of judgment, there is hope.
