Connecting Jeremiah to the Big Picture of the Bible

To understand the book of Jeremiah in two minutes, let’s place it within the big picture of the Bible.

The Bible reveals God's plan to rescue humanity through Jesus Christ.

The Old Testament shows why rescue is necessary by introducing the problem: humanity’s rebellion and separation from God.

And the Prophetic books warn of the consequences of this rebellion and call for repentance.

The book of Jeremiah takes place after the Law was given but before the Cross.

The Key Ideas of Jeremiah

Jeremiah shows, that despite repeated warnings, Israel does not repent ... and is therefore judged. Yet even amidst the ruin, God promises renewal.

So with that… let’s dive in:

Jeremiah lives in Jerusalem, in the Kingdom of Judah, where he serves as a Prophet—a messenger of God. Jeremiah's mission was so hard, he almost gave up.

You see, at the time, there was great political uncertainty, fear, and moral decay.

People no longer followed God's ways, but their own ideas.

And it was Jeremiah's mission to warn them that this behavior would have immense consequences.

The great power of Babylon was already at the gates, and Israel was racing toward disaster. Jeremiah repeatedly called on the people to return to God.

He emphasized that real change begins within, not in outward religious habits.

But his message was rejected…to the point where he was even mocked. And so, the judgment came

And Jeremiah witnessed the destruction of Jerusalem himself.

This suffering affected Jeremiah so deeply that he shed tears over it again and again and again.

That is why he is often called "the weeping prophet."

And it is precisely in this hopeless situation that God proved His faithfulness.

His judgment did not mark the end; rather, He continued His rescue plan. From a small remnant of the people, something new would arise. Just as Jeremiah had foretold years before, God would bring a time when He would renew people’s hearts from within, so that they would no longer rebel against Him.

Summary + Application to Christ

In addition, he announced a king who would one day finally bring justice and peace to the earth. This announced king is Jesus Christ.

So, Jeremiah shows, that despite repeated warnings, Israel does not repent ... and is therefore judged. Yet even amidst the ruin, God promises renewal.
