Connecting the New Testament to the Big Picture of the Bible
The Bible reveals God's plan to rescue humanity through Jesus Christ. This rescue plan consists of two parts, the Old and the New Testament.
The New Testament focuses on heaven and shows how the problem of mankind is solved. This heavenly solution is revealed in the four gospels. The book of Acts describes how the solution is spread. The epistles explain it more in detail and Revelation shows us how the solution will be completed in the future.
The Key Ideas of the New Testament
But what exactly is the solution? Well, to understand this, let's take a brief look at the problem. Mankind was made to represent God and show his glory on earth. Sadly, mankind rebelled against God and chose to not recognize his authority. This sin broke mankind's relationship with God.
And since God is life, this separation means death for all mankind. So, this begs the question, how can mankind now be saved from death? Well, in his love, God sends his son, Jesus Christ, who takes the punishment for all humanity by dying on a cross in their place. But then Jesus rises from the dead and conquers death. And now every person who accepts his substitutionary death through faith receives new life in Jesus Christ and is saved. Now indwelt with the Holy Spirit, he becomes a child of God and united with his Lord Jesus and the church. He can represent God on earth again. He's now part of the kingdom and makes God's glory visible until Jesus himself appears as king and reigns in righteousness.
Summary + Application to Christ
